Like it or not, 80% of a visitor's first impression is based on the way the site looks. Sites rate higher if they look good - even if the back end is a mess. I am looking for a super talented Drupal specialist who is very familiar with the Drupal backend, but who has chosen to specialize in theming and user interface rather than programming or data administration.
The successful candidate will serve as the senior team member for a large library system web site team in Columbia, SC.
As the manager of the web team, I believe my job is to advocate for the user by doing away with a lot of hoops we (libraries) make our users jump through, and by rethinking presentation of all sorts of information. Our team is doing some things that will be considered fairly radical in the library world. We aim to build a site so informative and entertaining that users in our county are inspired to check it FIRST. The basis of this approach is rooted in the belief that public libraries have a huge future as digital entities in addition to our brick and mortar locations. We are supported in that view by senior management.
There are three key elements to my plan:
1. Really solid programming. We are using some great Drupal firms for our build. If you get this job, you will be working with top notch talent and big names.
2. Common sense - from the user's perspective. We ALWAYS look from the user's perspective. We are currently in development on the most innovative information architecture and user interface in our industry.
3. Excellent visuals. From the first second a user enters the site they should be inspired, informed, and entertained. User interface is going to be key.
I see the most important part of this developer's role being #2 and #3. We can get people to build tools. We need someone to analyze from the user's perspective, and then drive the implementation of the tool home. This developer successfully marries the backend tools to the user interface, which results in the most friendly, intuitive, and simple navigation of the site possible.
The right candidate will understand theming, have a killer sense of aesthetics, and will look at the site through the eyes of the user. I want someone that knows how to build a module, but would rather work on the theme. Most of the design of the site will be rendered in the theming layer, so knowledge of custom tpls for every area is key.
Skills: Flash, Jquery, PHP, MySQL, GIT version control, Illustrator (and other Adobe CS tools), wire-framing, communication, the ability to accept feedback.
