When I shut down my Drupal6 site and built a new Drupal7 site I didn't realize my RSS feed was gonna bite me in the ass.

From what I can tell, my RSS post's ID# is based on Drupal's Node ID. Google Reader does not clear out its history. At all. So when I started posting at my new site with NID's of 7, 8, 9, etc Google saw that and went "Hey, I've seen this ID before, this isn't new, you're just updating an old post!" So any new post wasn't showing up as "new" at all and were dated a couple years back.

In the end I ran Devel Generate, had it create about 500 nodes so that any new post will have a NID of 500+. It didn't fix the old posts but any new ones are ok.

Question is - was there a better way to handle this? Can I manually set a minimum # for my Node ID somewhere? Without code? Can I change the Node ID of an existing node? Is there a way to get Google Reader to reset its counter? In a couple years if I decide to rebuild the site again, say with D8, I don't want to deal with this hassle again and generate 700+ nodes before I can post anything.
