Web Developer (PHP/Drupal 7) | Columbia Law School, Columbia University

Reporting to the Programmer Lead, the Web Developer in Columbia Law School's Office of Information Technology works closely and collaboratively with the Web Task Force to co-develop, enhance, optimize, and troubleshoot the school's web presences and Drupal/CMS projects. More broadly, this position supports the development and continual enhancement of web communications systems and tools that advance academic programs, scholarly exchange, and marketing/communication goals.

Position Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and test software using Drupal, PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript to fulfill the technical and functional requirements of Web Communications Strategy, including but not limited to developing/extending Drupal modules and themes, writing hooks, customizing views, customizing permissions, and configuring actions and triggers;
  • Work closely with the Web Task Force to design, develop, and test software integrations between Drupal and School/University systems (i.e. JavaEE applications, Oracle databases, and web services);
  • Design, develop, and test software using best practices and internal standards;
  • Assist in all maintenance/upgrade activities of LAMP servers and Drupal software;
  • Assist in release management activities of Drupal software and websites;
  • Implements designs from Web Communications Strategy into pixel accurate, standards-compliant XHTML and CSS2/3;
  • Troubleshoots CMS HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Drupal, PHP, MySQL and general web performance issues;
  • Works with Web Communications Strategy to troubleshoot system-related issues;
  • Maintains a close working relationship with the Web Communications team; Participate in design and code reviews; Complete development and integration tasks on time;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications which must be met to be considered an applicant

  • Bachelor's degree and/or the equivalent plus 2 - 4 years of related experience required;
  • Strong knowledge of the web stack;
  • Mastery in principles and technologies of web development (XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, JavaScript frameworks, web services, Web 2.0 design patterns, SEO patterns);
  • Extensive experience in web application development with proven experience in Drupal application development;
  • Strong technical skills in PHP, MySQL, Drupal, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS;
  • Knowledge of web application (especially PHP) security considerations;
  • Experience with SQL and database design (especially MySQL);
  • Strong system administration and maintenance skills in LAMP environments;
  • Experience with software development tools (i.e. Eclipse, Subversion, Git, etc.);
  • Strong knowledge and experience with implementing, maintaining, and optimizing high-availability, load balanced LAMP websites (especially Drupal);
  • Some web/graphic design and multimedia background preferred;
  • Ability and aptitude to work, collaborate and thrive in a multi-department project team;
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional written and oral communications skills;
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment.
