Hi Everyone,
This is something I've wanted to do with Drupal for years, and I'd like to see how the community feels about it.
Have you ever had an idea for a project, but didn't have the hours to really get it started? Do you know of a good cause that could use a good website? Have you ever made some unfortunate decisions and needed to get your ass pulled out of the fire?
Have a barn raising! Another way of thinking of this is time-banking. Invite the community, be prepared to feed those who show up, perhaps plan something nice for the evening, and get the help you need.
Make it a social event as well as a coding event, and you might be surprised at how many people will come out of the woodwork to help. I've seen this work for all kinds of skills on the East coast.
With the more formal version, hours volunteered are kept track of and drawn from. If someone helps you out with your project, you don't return the favor to the person, you return the favor to the timebank - to schedule projects.
In a less formal version, hours aren't kept track of, but each barn raising is fun enough to draw good folks.
I'm open to your ideas on how this might work.
We've got a great community with a lot of talent, and the potential to create substantial wealth in different forms. I bet everyone has an idea stuck on the back burner.
I'd love to hear what everyone thinks…
