Youth Radio Web Developer (on retainer)
This position is for a Web Developer for Youth Radio/Youth Media International in support of its web properties.
Responsibilities:
• Development duties include: coding, testing, debugging, documenting, deploying, monitoring, and support, in accordance with industry best practices for all our current and future web properties.
• Liaison with developers at our tech and media partners, both strategically and technically.
• Manage contracts with graphic designers and other contractors.
• Proactively make strategic recommendations to improve our websites: youthradio.org, alldayplay.fm, and turnstylenews.com, and other web properties as they are developed, inclusive of any related mobile-specific renditions of said web properties.
• Respond to requests for feature additions or upgrades with a feasibility report and estimated time to live for that feature to be added.
• Utilizing partner sites’ APIs to integrate their media into our own web properties (or vice versa).
• Redesign or allow for easy user customization (skinning) of websites for special events, holidays, promo, launches, etc.
• Update websites with necessary security patches with minimal downtime or advisement of the consequences applying (or not applying) patches.
• Be proactive in the advisement of updates, plugins, and new features that would be beneficial (but not necessarily necessary) for web properties.
• Maintenance and upgrades of our web platform and websites.
• Provide technical guidance on a wide variety of issues including web strategies, social networking platforms, and emergent technologies.
• Facilitate the reporting of usage statistics and analytics into meaningful data for CCO and Senior Producer to read and interpret.
• Interface with IT team to collaborate on technical details of website administration (hosting, backups, determining bandwidth needs, accessibility to servers, etc).
• Migrating web properties to other CMS platforms as the need arises.
• Documenting any original coding done to the websites.
• Ability to meet in person as needed (typically one or twice a month at most) at the Youth Radio offices.
Experience, Skills and Requirements
• Minimum two years experience with Drupal 5/6/7 module and theme development.
• Minimum two years experience with Wordpress and plugin development.
• Working knowledge of jQuery, XML, HTML/XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and Flash implementation.
• Working knowledge of Unix and/or Linux systems and related tools (ssh, ftp, cvs, rsync, etc).
• Understanding of MySQL and database design concepts.
• Working knowledge of Apache HTTP server software.
• Ability to modify and optimize existing code base as well as develop new code.
• Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Work and communicate effectively and build consensus in a team environment.
• Proven oral and written communications skills.
• Possess a self-starter approach to work with an eagerness to consistently meet and exceed objectives.
• Demonstrated knowledge of industry trends with respect to emerging and existing web technologies.
• College degree preferred or equivalent technical education and experience.
• Portfolio of previous work, including screenshots, live websites, and example code.
Preference will be given to candidates who possess:
• Working knowledge of other content management systems.
• Knowledge of C-based programming languages.
• Experience with Adobe CS5 suite applications. (Illustrator/Photoshop).
• Experience with social media APIs.
• Knowledge of mobile app development practices.
• An interest in public media.
