Hi, I hope your finding Quickstart useful if you're getting this :-)
I am behind on my plans for QS 1.0, but that's life in open source. I did get a chance to test out the upgrade process in Ubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04.
Ubuntu put alot of effort into their new Unity interface in this release. This replaces Gnome and is great for n00bs, but not so interesting for LAMP developers. Luckily, on the login page, you can select "Ubuntu Classic" to get Gnome. If you don't have 3d extensions turned on (the default), Unity won't work anyway, and you'll get Gnome by default. There are some other updates that are interesting (Firefox 4, etc), so here's how I've updated my Quickstart.
I haven't testing this beyond installing a site, so if you find any issues, post up in the issue queue.
Luckily, Virtualbox supports "Checkpoints" so if you have a problem, you can back it out very easily. Here's my notes from the upgrade:
Notes:
1) Shutdown Quickstart. In the Virtualbox OSE Manager click Quickstart, then "Snapshots", then the little camera icon. This will make a backup of the current state you can return to later.
2) Start Quickstart and start the update (System->Admin->Update->Upgrade to 11.04)
- You will see dialogs on Config file changes:
- - Forward twice to restart upgraded services
- - Keep sudoers, php.ini, squid3/squid.conf, phpmyadmin/config.inc.php
- - Accept changes to other files.
- Install GRUB on all devices (check all boxes)
- Remove unneeded packages
- Ignore the graphics warning. It will default to Gnome classic which is what you probably want anyways.
RabbitVCS (and others) do not have Natty PPAs yet, so if you re-enable them now, you will get warnings when trying to update.
Good luck!
Mike
