I kept thinking about Fresno Drupal site and want to share my thoughts with the community:
About the site:
1. Assign roles to members to give them more permissions ( ex. editor to blog or create own course ); have 3 roles with more/less permissions, depending on member's interest. Install secured messaging module ?
About the business:
1. Separate vendors into categories, include search ( faceted search module )
2. Include something like a "badge" next to the vendor's name, with "available now" or "not available now"; include tweets for each member ( I suppose we all tweet, more or less ).
3. Include categories of other businesses, not directly related to the web site development, for ex. publishers, marketers, gov. contracting, chambers of commerce, etc.
4. Actively solicit sponsors, give them advertising space ( advertising module )
Sponsors can also give donations to nonprofit organizations in our community - include "donate now" button, link to local shelters, etc.
Unrelated idea: develop an industry specific multiple member site ( ex. http://www.musicteachershelper.com/ ) I wonder if there is anything for organic food, renewable tech, etc...
