Thursday, February 15, 6:30 - 8:30pm
University of Waterloo, Hagey Hall rm 119
Directions to the room

We have two topics and presenters for our February meetup:

A look at the new Dashboard and Navigation modules

by Andrew Berry (Lullabot)

Andrew will show the current state of the Navigation and Dashboard modules for Drupal, which are both slated to become part of Drupal itself in a future release. He'll share what the plans are for Drupal 10.3, as well as how those with development (of any kind!) and accessibility expertise can contribute.

Why your functional PHP code (probably) sucks: A sceptical look at functional programming and why you might use it

by Liam McDermott (Woolwich Web Works)

Liam has been dabbling in functional programming since 2006, but only recently figured out why it's useful. Instead of letting you take 18 years like he did, he'll just tell you in 10 minutes.

Details

Unlocking additional settings for view blocks

Rick Hawkins will demonstrate how to leverage the Chaos Tools Views module to provide site editors with more settings when placing a view block than the "Items per page" setting provided by Drupal core. Additional settings include: hiding or reordering fields, configuring or disabling filters, configuring sorts, and more. Enabling these settings empowers editors to display custom lists of content without requiring a new view or view display to be created for each variant they want.

Location

Online via Zoom; the URL for the meeting will be shared in the SeaDUG Slack workspace and with anyone who signs up for the event on groups.drupal.org.

PHP Web Scraping Libraries

$

When writing custom or contrib modules that are aimed at web scraping, it makes most sense to use a library, without reinventing the wheel. Furthermore, it is advised to write a generic module first that handles scrapping requests and is capable of mapping them into fields of a specific content type, kind of the way the Feeds module does that. Targetting a specific site with specific selectors could then extend on that, either through a UI or a separate module's code.

Here is a list of useful links. If adding links, make sure they include working PHP examples. Furthermore, capture links in the Internet Archive: Wayback Machine so that if the URL is removed the URL can be changed to the web archive's snapshot. Staying in the Open Source spirit, solutions work without a subscription (API key) would be preferred, although it is true that when effective antibot measures are in place on the target site, this is almost inevitable.

Venn Brewing Circular LogoIt's a mild winter, so let's get together. It's a great time to have a drink and some conversation inside Venn Brewing. There's often a food truck on-site for the dinner hour too if you're hungry or we could order food together to be delivered from a local place.

Let's get together to chat Drupal or whatever and do it with some beer (they also have some non-beer options available as well). Come join us for a Drupal Happy Hour, 5:30-ish on Thursday, March 7th at Venn Brewing in South Minneapolis. Not many get there before 6:00 pm, but I will try to be there at 5:30pm.

Venn is a great venue, offering plenty of space and a great array of rotating taps to choose from. Stop on by and talk Drupal, or anything else, with some of the local community. Board games have been known to break out late sometimes, although it's been a few years since that's happened now.

The great migration: a Drupal journey and Biotech Careers use case

Todd Smith will present a use case on Digital World Biology’s Biotech-Careers.org (BTC) web site. BTC is a highly visited biotechnology education resource that provides career information for those interested in technical careers. A significant part of BTC is its biotech employer database, a dynamic resource of over 9500 companies and organizations, with locations & maps, organized by over 500 taxonomy terms. BTC is presently on Drupal 7 and is being migrated to Drupal 10. Smith will cover the site’s general content and how views are used to combine terms, mapped locations, and company lists to create rich navigation experiences and get Google’s “attention.” He will also describe his initial experiences migrating data from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10, comment on what he thought would be hard, but turned out to easy, thought would be easy, but seems hard, and what he will miss from Drupal 7 and looks forward to in Drupal 10.

Join us on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, at 6:30 PM for an engaging presentation by Rob Loach on "Drupal 10 CKEditor 5 Hot Sauce". We are thrilled to have Rob, who is world-renowned for his fantastic presentations.

With the transition to Drupal 10, we saw a move from CKEditor 4 to CKEditor 5, bringing about an improved content editing experience, enhanced collaboration features, better accessibility, responsive design, and tighter integration with Drupal. Unfortunately, this transition also introduced a challenging upgrade path. But does it have to be painful? In this presentation, you’ll learn about:

  • The new features of CKEditor 5.
  • How to seamlessly use it with Drupal 10.
  • Common pitfalls in moving from CKEditor 4 to 5.
  • How to fix incompatible plugins.
  • The future possibilities in content editing.

It may not be happening on the third Tuesday of the month, but DrupalCamp Cemaes is coming up on 8 June 2024!

In all seriousness I really do miss my Brighton Drupal buddies and would love for you to come here for a camp I'm organising. It's happening in Cemaes, the village where I now live on Anglesey, so it's a bit of a trek, but there's good train links to Holyhead which is just down the road so getting here shouldn't be too much of an issue.

It's been too long since I've been able to see you all, and I might actually be coming down for a visit in September. But please come to Cemaes! Frankie misses you, too!

More info is available on the website, hope to see you here!

Unleashing the power of ECA: No-code coding for ambitious site builders

John Locke will give a preview of his DrupalCon session about the Events, Conditions, and Actions (ECA) module. ECA revolutionizes what is possible to do in Drupal without editing code.

In Drupal 6 and 7, Rules was a power module that let you glue actions together with events and conditions. ECA is the next generation of rules -- it hooks into nearly all Drupal hooks and events, leverages all existing actions, and puts it all together in a graphical flow chart that helps you sort out what needs to happen with project managers and website owners.

In this session preview John will discuss why, how, and when to use this powerful new ecosystem of modules, and see some practical examples of it in use. We will delve into what you need to know to figure out tricky scenarios, and why even experienced coders might want to use ECA instead of creating another custom module.

University of Waterloo, Hagey Hall rm 119.

For this month's meetup, Megan McDermott (that's me!) will show some work in progress on a website for an academic conference. The site uses the Event Platform module as a starting point. I'll demo that module out of the box, and then show some changes we're making for this project.

Next, we'll take a look at setting up a theme with Single Directory Components (SDC) . SDC are now stable in Drupal core! This part of the presentation will cover:

  • What are SDC?
  • Why use SDC?
  • Differences & similarities between SDC and pattern libraries (Storybook)
  • How to set it up

Finally, if we still have some time, I'll show some super-cool newly supported advanced CSS stuff.

**If you would be interested in attending this meetup remotely, please leave a comment here or contact me at megan@woolwichweb.works. We would consider trying a hybrid format if there is interest.
